Teaching the circle of intimacy- focus on yourself- part 1
Written on 23rd Jul 2013 by Sylvia Lowery
Individuals with autism struggle to recognise boundaries of intimacy. Alex and I have started working through the STARS Skills Training for Relationship-building & Sexual Awareness. We have no idea whether this course is helpful but we will share our journey as we work through the curriculum.
The circle of intimacy.
The first person in the circle is the individual. Here is Alex’s work.
We wrote down our likes and dislikes.
Favourite food.
Where we would like to go on holiday.
Something we are proud of.
Something unique about ourselves.
We were asked to say something nice about the person to the left of us.
This kind of exercise helped us to realise we are good at some things and we all have something in common.
Alex says, “I found it easy to talk about my favourite food and holiday destination easy. However I found talking myself a lot more difficult. I found it hard to compliment people. I managed to say I was grateful to my mum for all the help she has given me but I really didn’t like doing it. Someone said they were amazed at the way I had coped with autism. I found this embarrassing. I didn’t feel I learnt anything new about myself from the first part of this book. I look forward to the next part which is about family and friends.”
