Jessica-Jane Applegate MBE to abseil the ArcelorMittal Orbit for Autistica
Written on 17th Sep 2015 by Sylvia Lowery
The Autistica Team are delighted to be able to offer you a new and exciting opportunity to abseil the ArcelorMittal Orbit at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Stratford, London. Standing at 114 metres high (making it the UK’s tallest sculpture) the ArcelorMittal Orbit designed by Turner-Prize winning artist Sir Anish Kapoor is a truly spectacular, unique and iconic venue. This experience only opened from the start of 2015 so you will be one of the first to take part in the highest freefall abseil in the UK, an 80 metre descent!
We are very excited to be joined by British Paralympic gold medallist swimmer, Jessica-Jane Applegate MBE. Jessica-Jane is nineteen and has autism; we know what a huge inspiration she is for young people with disabilities so we are delighted that she’s agreed to take on this challenge with Autistica.
We ask that you aim to raise £250, which will fund vital research to help people with autism and their families. Please don’t let this target put you off – the Autistica team will help with your fundraising every step of the way and will of course be delighted with all funds raised! You will receive your own Autistica t-shirt and we can help you set up an online fundraising page or send you some paper sponsorship forms.
If you sign up, you will receive an allocated time slot between 9am and 4:30pm. We can work your abseil time to suit you as best as possible. Your safety is paramount and the staff at the Orbit are all trained professionals who have run many abseils from the tower before so rest easy that you’ll be in incredibly safe hands. We recommend that you’d allow around 90 minutes for the whole abseil experience, from arrival at the Orbit to your safety briefing, ascent and descent. Once you’ve completed the abseil, you’ll be allowed back up to the viewing platform to experience the amazing panoramic views of London again if you wish.
Please note that in order to take part you must be 18 years or older on the day of the event.
This is a fantastic chance to challenge and enjoy yourself, whilst at the same time supporting Autistica to make a positive impact on the lives of those touched by autism. To sign up, please get in touch with the team on 05601 183 601 or email friends@autistica.org.uk The deadline to sign up is Friday 18th September at 5pm so please don’t delay if you’d like to secure a place.
