Alex Lowery speaks about autism

Book review by Esther Lowery of Face-Value Comics- Autism superhero

Written on 14th Feb 2014 by Alex Lowery

Would you describe my sister as a blond girl or a girl with blond hair?

This review is by my sister Esther Lowery who is 15 and is a comic book fan and aspiring writer.

This is a review of Face-Value Comics.

The world the comic is set in is fascinating, and the other characters interesting.

I look forward to reading more issues of it.

I will now review the characters.

Specifically, I will be discussing the character, Michael, who is autistic.

My opinion on this character is as follows. The idea was good, but it was rather badly executed.

The way he was written made him and his characteristics seem rather bland. The immediate outing of him as autistic was a bad move. It would have been better, and much more effective, to just have him with the characteristics of an autistic person. If you really felt the need to say he was autistic, it would’ve been better to mention it later on, though it’s not really needed at all.

If the author had felt happy with how they were portraying Michael, they wouldn’t have felt the need to announce it.

There are also several points where his thought-pattern doesn’t make sense, there is a scene in the beginning where Michael is freaking out because he is different, but then a moment later he is wondering if the alien knows about liquid helium. I know autism pretty well and if my brother Alex was anxious about being different he wouldn’t just switch onto something else.

Overall, the character could have been written better, but it was a good idea.

The world the comic is set in is fascinating, and the other characters interesting.

I look forward to reading more issues of it.
