Autism and the difficulty of working under pressure
Written on 28th Jun 2024 by Alex Lowery
I am autistic and have never enjoyed working under pressure. Working under pressure has tended to make me very anxious and unable to think straight, leading to more mistakes.

I went to College to study media. Overall I enjoyed the course and I am glad I did it but I did still sometimes get very stressed. I got stressed about meeting deadlines and had to ask for extensions, I also got stressed when I didn’t understand the work and I got stressed over the Ucas application.
Thankfully I had a support worker at College who did a great job providing support. I was also dis-applied from the Welsh back. However, during breaks I wouldn’t socialise. I would go to top room. When stressed I would hit my head sometimes but no one knew because I would do it in private. If my support worker was asked he’d probably have said I coped fine because he didn’t see it.
