Anime Quotes that Echo My Autistic Journey
Written on 10th Aug 2023 by Alex Lowery
I watch a lot of anime and I have found as an autistic person that sometimes there are quotes from anime that I find relatable to autism and myself. I will share the quotes and explain how I relate below each quote. You can see these quotes below.
“Sometimes I feel like a failure. Like there’s no hope for me. But even so, I’m not gonna give up. Ever!” — Izuku Midoriya from My Hero Academia
This quote is something I have identified with throughout my life. I have faced many difficulties and challenges. I remember when I was about 15/16 I started to become much more aware of the impact my difficulties had on me and I worried that I wouldn’t have a successful life as an adult. Despite this I never intended to give up. I was determined to continue to learn skills and get as much out of life as possible. I definitely still haven’t reached the potential I wanted to but I have still made progress without a doubt.

“It is not bad to dream. But you also have to consider what’s realistic.” – All Might from My Hero Academia
This quote also hits home for me. Through a lot of my life: I have been a very determined person and have had a strive to succeed in life. However, I have also learned that realism is important. I have made progress throughout my life and I can continue to make progress but that doesn’t change the fact that there are things I will probably never be able to do. I have a lot of support in my day to day living. I have often wished I could just get on in life without any struggle but this is simply not realistic. I’m always going to face challenges and difficulties and I’ll probably always need some support. In my teens I did hope that I would just keep making progress to the point where as an adult I’d be able to live independently but that’s never really happened. I’ve really had to learn to accept this. I do still hope I can become more independent but I’m sure there’s always going to be struggles.

“I don’t care what normal people do anymore. I’m gonna live my life the way I want to.” – lori Nagase from Kokoro Connect
I find this quote above very relatable. I used to try really hard to be act like other people but I could never quite get it right. I would always come across as odd. I have had to learn to accept and embrace who I am as a person and not try too hard to be normal.
“I tried to be normal once. It was boring.” — Juuzou Suzuya from Tokyo Ghoul
This quote is quite similar to the previous one. I did used to try so hard to be normal but I’ve also come to learn that normal is overrated and a setting on a tumble dryer. I’ve also found that I’ve found people who are eccentric to be more interesting than people who are “normal”. Normal is simply nothing to strive to be.
“My mind starts to wonder and I don’t realise how fast I’m going. I think too much. I get so absorbed that I forgot where I am”. — Kouga Gennosuke from Basilisk
This quote REALLY hits home for me! I am a really fast walker and a lot of the time and people have a hard time keeping up with me. In addition to this I am often so absorbed in my own own thoughts that I’m not even paying attention to my surroundings.
