Alex Lowery speaks about autism

An Introduction to Megan

Written on 28th Aug 2020 by Alex Lowery

Today we have a guest article from another autistic advocate by the name of Megan. Do check out her Facebook page here and her website through this link.

I would like to introduce myself as Megan, I’m 20 years old and I got diagnosed at the age of 13 as autism speech and Language alongside anxiety, and very recently this last year I got diagnosed as having dyscalculia. Before I got diagnosed I was in a mainstream environment for two years before I went to my lifesaver SEN school (Special Education Needs Secondary school) until the age of 19 I left.

At the age of 16 when I was doing my GSCE exams, I started to create a page called ‘It’s okay to be different’, where I could write about my everyday life struggles and positive experiences with autism. I blog many topics relating to certain struggles and even certain achievements I have done during my lifetime of a child to now. I very recently wrote about a blog of the struggles with food. Even why I like a certain food and the reason people think we are ‘fussy eaters’.

I struggled massively when I got much older and even now I still do. I also struggle to remember to even drink, as that the huge part I struggled a lot of. Being autistic for me is my superpower. I see things in so much detail and I hear things from a far distance. And I always store so much information that I remember all the years, as I have good long term memory. I do not want autism to be a bad thing, because it’s not. I would like autism to be a good thing for many reasons, whether it’s getting a job, going out to places, friendships or relationships. We can do so much if we have the support and the understanding, alongside the acceptance. This is why I’m doing this page so I can be heard and share all my experiences with you.
