Alex Lowery got to meet Dr. Temple Grandin

One adult with autism who’s inspired me is Dr. Temple Grandin. For those of you who don’t know, Temple Grandin is famous for her high knowledge and understanding of animals. She was also one of the first people with autism to put into words what it’s like to have autism. When I was 15/16 (and feeling a certain degree of negativity towards my autism) hearing about people like her who managed to use autism to their advantage helped me to view autism in a more positive way, and gave me hope that maybe, just maybe I could succeed in life too. Ever since, Temple Grandin has been someone who I’ve always really wanted to meet. For a long time I thought I’d likely never get the opportunity to meet her in person. I heard about this Conference in Reading that she was speaking at, and it made me very excited. I still wasn’t sure if I would get to meet her, but at least I’d hear her speak. I went to the Conference yesterday and not only did I hear her speak, but also I got to meet her in person for the first and probably the last time. It was great to meet someone who I’ve wanted to meet for as long as I’ve known about her. She seemed interested in what job I was doing. I bought a copy of one of her books and she signed it for me. I also gave a her a copy of my book. At this Conference I also got to meet Robyn Steward who I’ve also wanted to meet for a while and she did a speech. Dean Beadle (the man who mentored me in Public speaking) opened the Conference and also did a talk of his own. He was as funny as always! Other speakers were there, including Jon Adams and someone called Jamie who brings his teddy lion to his talks. All the speakers did a really good job with their Presentations and it was a really good day.
