“Extraordinary Attorney Woo” is a South Korean series about a brilliant, newly minted autistic lawyer. The show has received generally positive reviews for its depiction of autism, with many saying that it has realistically portrayed those with ASD.
The show has been praised for its simple but heartwarming representation of autism which breeds acceptance and empathy for those who live with ASD. The show’s portrayal of Woo is a bit stereotypical in the way it shows her as a socially awkward autistic genius which is really nothing new. However, it’s good that it focused on a female for a change as it’s usually a male who plays an autistic character.
It’s also worth noting that Korea isn’t quite so aware of autism so having any autistic character in a Korean drama is a good thing to help make people aware. As an autistic person, I could relate to the way she asks questions just to be certain and get reassurance. The cinematography used to show her perspective was done cleverly. The show presents a good message that you shouldn’t judge an autistic person purely from meeting them. Even if they appear to have a lot of challenges they may have capabilities that you can’t automatically see and vice versa. It’s a shame they didn’t get an autistic actress to play the character but Park Eun-bin did a great job at playing the character and so did the voice actress for the English dub. With the addition of a severely autistic character named Kim Jeang-hun, they were also able to make it clear that autism covers a spectrum and not every autistic person is going to be like Young Woo.
