Reasons why I stay in my room:
Written on 9th Aug 2021 by Alex Lowery
I’m currently still living with my mum and two sisters. I often find I like to stay in my bedroom through most of the day and only go down stirs every now and again. I was recently asked why I do this and to be honest, I’ve never really thought about why before but I will try to give answers here today.

One thing I’d like to make perfectly clear is it has absolutely nothing to do with not liking my family. I am more comfortable with them than I am with anyone else. I often find that I just want time from any other people at all whether they are my family or not. If I’m writing an article or watching something or managing Facebook groups, I prefer doing this in quiet so I can devote all my attention to it without distraction. Another reason is Stimming. I spend a lot of time doing self-stimulatory behaviors which are a series of movements that many people on the autism spectrum do.
I will stim in front of my family but I still prefer to be alone if possible so that I can do it in peace. The final reason is when I’ve given a speech or if I’ve had a very busy day where I’ve had to talk to people. This is definitely rarer since lockdown but it is something I used to face a lot. After these events, I tend to be exhausted that I want some time to myself so I can recharge my batteries (not literally) so that I don’t experience high levels of stress.
