Will I ever be independent?
Written on 16th Nov 2020 by Alex Lowery
When I was 18 my goal was to be independent in 10 years. I am now 27 years old and I still don’t feel I’ve quite reached this goal. However, I definitely feel like I’m still learning more skills.
I do now accept the fact that I probably won’t ever be 100% independent since I have so many difficulties that impact my life but what I do believe is that I can continue to learn which I have been doing. A few years ago I got a machine called the thermomix with guided cooking.

I’ve found this really helpful with cooking meals independently. Lately I have been starting to do more cooking. I have in my schedule to cook a meal once a week. I’ve been cooking curries most weeks and I’ve also recently been learning how to make a Sunday Roast Dinner. Last week my mum showed me how to make a Roast Dinner and I filmed her doing it so my hope is that I can watch the recording and follow the instructions. I did try this method out with another meal and it seemed to work out okay so hopefully the Roast Dinner will too.
I have also got a list of tasks to do during the week so I hope that this can help build independent living skills. I believe many autistics can continue to keep learning and improving throughout their lives.
