Autism Awareness in Holywell

Alex’s event in Holywell was planned because we wanted to make two films that would be available for a pay per view download. This would enable Alex to reach more people with his message and help Alex to earn a more regular income. Alex managed to raise £46 for Autism Wishes which is fantastic.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Asthma

Alex’s event in Holywell on the 29th July went very well. He woke up with asthma in the morning and was feeling pretty poorly. He A We phoned our Doctor and made an appointment for him to see the nurse. He uses allergy reliever every day to keep his nose allergy in control. We realised that Alex’s reliever had been broken for a few days. Alex’s dad went out and bought another one for Alex and I got Alex using his spacer device and ventolin reliever every 15 minutes. Alex used the new allergy reliever device and inhalers throughout the morning and by 10.50 we were able to phone to cancel the nurse appointment. Alex wanted to concentrate on his talks for the event in the afternoon.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Helpers

Some of us went to the venue at 12 O’clock and began to set up for the event. The camera crewe arrived and the Church Warden let us in and showed us where everything was. Alex stayed at home with Esther until 20 minutes before the event. We moved the chairs, and set everything up. Everyone who was helping had a Subway lunch.

We had to have a list of all those who were in the building in case there was a fire. Ifan was in charge of the disabled parking. There were only a few spaces available and we wanted to keep them for those who needed them. Ruth served all our guests cold drinks in the half time break. Capel Penbryn was a fantastic venue and we are very thankful to the Church for letting us hire their building for a very reasonable price.

 

Growing up with Autism

Alex spoke about how he always felt different as a child with autism. Why did he have therapy? Why did he find things harder as a than other children? He spoke about finding out he had autism and how he felt ashamed and yet it made sense. Alex spoke about how he tried to be like other teens but they just thought he was weird. Finally Alex moved onto how he came to embrace having autism and how he tries to focus on what he can do rather than what he can’t do. One member of the audience said she would like to see Alex speaking in a lot of schools. She felt that Alex’s story would help a lot of young people who have similar fears to Alex.

Autism Awareness Training

This talk helps to give a basic introduction to autism. Alex spoke about his difficulties with social situations and how the baddie in a film is always the one who doesn’t give eye contact. He spoke about some of his difficulties and there help he needs to succeed and live an independent life. Alex amused us all with cartoon images of himself ‘cooking the books’ literally rather than being a bad accountant. I suspect Alex doesn’t know the other meaning of this statement. It was heartening to have Mr Mark Isherwood out Assembly Member present at this event. I feel that these talks were among the best Alex’s has ever delivered which is remarkable considering he was still struggling with his asthma.
