10 things I have learnt about autism

Alex’s mum shares what she has learnt as Alex moves into adulthood.

1. Don’t fear –Before I had Alex I was frightened of having a child with autism. I had done a placement at a special school when I was 17 and there was a child who was in his own world and seemed unreachable. I felt that I could cope with any disability apart from autism. God proved me wrong because he sent me Alex to teach me the truth.

2. Never give up – Enough said!

3. Don’t have a head on – Individuals with autism have so much to cope with on a daily basis. What may seem like defiance is more likely to be a misunderstanding of the situation. A head on confrontation will make matters worse and will increase behaviours such as aggression and self- abuse.

4. Teach rules in advance.

5. Break everything down into small steps.

6.Use rewards.

7. Provide a structured routine.

8. Use visual schedules.

9. Understand that an individual with autism thinks differently.

10. Allow a place for timeout.

It was a sad day to be finishing working with Alex .I have looked back to when Alex has wanted to learn something using small steps he has reached his goal. It will not be the end of Alex learning new things. If task are broken down into small steps anyone who has Autism will understand easier. One of the thing that Alex has taught me is not to tell him he was doing a good job if he was not. telling him what he has gone well and prompts to do the skill that he has not got, so he can get it.
I have been very lucky to of spent so many years loving my job. I and my family wish you Alex all the best for your future.
